Summary
Patricia Cornwell: In a cruel and insidious way
Late one December night in Richmond, Virginia, the head of forensic pathology, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, is preparing for a very unusual autopsy. The subject of the autopsy, Ronnie Joe Waddell, is still alive, but not for long.
At eleven minutes past five, Waddell will be executed for a murder he committed ten years ago.
On the same evening, another crime was discovered: the body of a boy killed in a particularly cruel and insidious manner was found next to a garbage container.
Kay Scarpetta will see an uncanny similarity between that murder and the one for which Waddell was sentenced to death.
