Hertmans Stefan

Summary

Stefan Hertmans: The Convert

At the dawn of the Crusades, seventeen-year-old Vigdis Adelais, the daughter of a half-cultivated Norman living in Rouen, one day passes by the yeshiva and stares at David Todros, the son of the chief rabbi of Narbonne. Although her father criticizes the incitement of hatred against the Jews, when he finds out about the forbidden love, he locks Vigdis in a monastery. After a successful escape, the young convert takes the name Hamutal, and although it seems that she will find peace for herself and her children in the mountain town of Monieux, David and Hamutal are not even aware of what trials and tragedies await them.

The novel Convert by the Flemish writer Stefan Hertmans is a great reconstruction of events that, although almost a thousand years old, seem incredibly contemporary. With its exceptionally painted characters and atmosphere, as well as the depth of historical understanding, Obracenica is undoubtedly the masterpiece of an author who has already become famous as The Painter and War.

"Obracenica Hertmans wrote an extraordinary novel, epic and lyrical at the same time, in which the political and personal are intertwined in a dramatic way, in which the present echoes in the past as much as possible. of the novel we can expect."
De Reactor

"A fascinating story... Hertmans depicts the medieval world with the same sensibility and sense of detail that were so successful inThe Painter and the War. Suspenseful and attractive... The Convert is an exceptional work.
Sunday Times

"The Convert is a portrait of an extremely strong woman. Hertmans created in her a heroine for all time."
