Cain James

Summary

James Cain: The Postman Always Rings Twice

Although James M. Cain is nowhere near the status of Chandler or Hammett, the two most famous authors of the so-called hard-boiled crime fiction, genre experts rank him among the very top writers of this type of crime, and quite a few of them believe that his works significantly exceed genre boundaries. Despite this, his novels are, above all, thanks to the film adaptations (in addition to The Postman, there is Double Insurance and Mildred Pierce) today much better known than he himself. But it wasn't always like that, especially not in 1934, when Cain published his first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and it was a sensational success! The audience and critics were unanimous in their assessment that it was a masterpiece, and it received special recognition from Albert Camus who said that Cain's debut inspired him for his - The Stranger!
The Postman Always Rings Twice is a poignant love story, set in a crime genre context, whose main protagonists are lovers from the bottom of the social hierarchy: Frank, an incorrigible wanderer, who does not think too much about the future and Cora, a cook-waitress-housekeeper, wife Nick, the owner of the diner-motel-gas station. At first glance, the two of them, at her instigation, decide to kill Nick. After an unsuccessful attempt, Frank leaves, but only for a short time, because he cannot, and does not want to, fight against the desire for Cora. With that, Nick's fate was sealed, but in the long run, so were the fates of the cursed lovers. Because - the postman always rings twice: if you get away with it once, you won't get away with it the second time, crime always pays off...
