Summary

Umberto Eco: Prague Cemetery

"Prague Cemetery" ends where the real story begins. A resident Parisian forger and spy handed a manuscript about a secret meeting of Jewish rabbis to the head of the Russian secret service in France. A bomb will soon be placed under the foundations of the 20th century: a pamphlet that explains all the evils and all the misfortunes of the world as the result of a Jewish conspiracy to conquer the world.

We know what happens next. In 1905, the book "Magnificent in the lowest" by Sergei Nilus appeared in Russia, which contained a manuscript entitled "Protocols of the Elders of Zion". The pamphlet is immediately translated independently into numerous languages: in America, Henry Ford himself finances the printing of 500,000 copies.

In 1921, the London Times announces that the "Protocols" are a forgery. One part of the text was apparently copied from the criticism of Napoleon III "Dialogue in Hell" by Maurice Joly, published as early as 1864. But this does not stop the dismemberment of the "Protocol" as an original document. In 1925, Hitler concluded in "Mein Kampf" that "when this book becomes the common heritage of all inhabitants, the Jewish danger can be considered extinguished".

And both soon become a threatening reality. By the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the "Protocols" became "the most widespread work in the world after the Bible", and in 1941 the Nazis made a decision on the so-called "the final solution of the Jewish question".
