Summary
Milan P. Rakočević: Tasilija: in search of a painting
What kind of journey is it? Where did I go in my youth, and now I want to write this belated report? Deep in the Sahara, somewhere on the triple border of Algeria, Libya and Niger, there is a difficult-to-reach mountain area called Tassili N'Ajjer (Tassilia). On that mountain, an errant French lieutenant during a routine patrol in 1933 with a squad of mechanics2 accidentally discovered an ancient site of prehistoric cave paintings. A few years later, the French archaeologist Henri Lot found out about this discovery and was the first to visit Tassilia with an expedition. It was in 1956. It is believed that there are over one hundred thousand prehistoric paintings and engravings dating from 8000 to 1500 BC (10,000 years from today). Henri Lot published the results of his research, which resonated in the world as one of the most significant events in the field of archeology after the discovery of the Lascaux cave in France.
