War and Peace is Tolstoy's greatest work, on which he spent seven years of continuous work, from 1863 to 1869. It depicts Russian society during the Napoleonic period. It is considered one of Tolstoy's two masterpieces, along with Anna Karenina, and is one of the greatest novels in the history of literature.
