Summary

Matthew Gregory Lewis: The Monk

The novel The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis stands out in its theme, style and performance from the framework of its time (end of the 18th century) and
represents a superb offshoot of the romantic Gothic school. Lewis wrote it as a twenty-year-old, in ten weeks of inspiration, and because of its salacious content he published it anonymously. In this debut, he tried to combine the supernatural and narrative elements of his few
predecessors and present his own conception of the horror novel in a new and receptive way, i.e. a kind of gothic horror novel. He placed the main character of Father Ambrosius, a distinguished monk "with a reputation for sanctity", in Spain, in the 17th century, describing his turbulent life, rise and fall. Although he was deeply convinced that he is resistant to all earthly temptations, Ambrosius still gives in and surrenders to the devil himself, incarnated in the form of a young priestess with whom he "commits fornication" and thus opens Pandora's box, which in turn leads him to a spiritual and moral collapse. Although critics, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge, met the book with a knife, and because of the scenes of violence and sex called the author a "degenerate and pervert" who tries to pervert and devalue established norms of behavior, the success of the work was incredible, so that soon after its publication (1796) several editions followed. In addition to the provocative content, the success was certainly helped by Byron and de Sade, who expressed real enthusiasm for Lewis's work... In any case, Redovnik survived and outlived its time, miraculously timeless and today conquers with vitality and unrestrainedness. and "members" Matthew Gregory Lewis in the catalog of the National and University Library in Zagreb, which means that this is the first translation of a work by Lewis into Croatian!
