Irena Vrkljan is one of the most prominent Croatian writers. She was educated in Zagreb and at the Film Academy in Berlin.

«My generation met Irena Vrkljan as a prose writer. I always associate Irene Vrkljan's prose with love, I don't know why, because love is not often an explicit theme of her writing, in the sense that it is not about classic romance novels, that the core of the plot is related to the love relationship of two people. But love is always an implicit layer of Vrkljanica's writing. Love as an absence, what has slipped away, what is missing, what was and no longer exists, what is fleeting and we are afraid that it will not disappear. Love as a relationship between two adults, love as a relationship between sisters, between parents, between parents and children. The lack of that love. Love as a relationship of friendship, love as the essence of a relationship: as communication. When there is no love, there is no communication. My love is with Irena Vrkljan, personally.
