Summary

Julio Cortazar: Schools

"Schools" is the magnum opus of the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar and one of the most important works of Hispanic American literature. The meaning of this novel splits in several directions, it has many possibilities of interpretation, and just reading it is a real adventure considering that the writer offers the reader - as a true co-creator of meaning - at least two different ways of reading the book. Cortázar's "Schools" are played on two continents: on this side and on this side, in two cities: Paris and Buenos Aires, in whose topos, atmospheres and paths of the characters are reflected the true fabric of life.

The richness of "Schools" is also revealed in the language, in the Luddism of speech, styles and narrative modes, in the interweaving of the experimental, poetic and realistic, in the imitation of jazz variations, humor, irony or a tendency towards the surreal. For Cortázar, art must be both innovation and cognition and play. A real game implies the existence of firm rules and enthusiasm in the act of playing; means both combinatorics and freedom. And "Skolice" is precisely the top literary game that fascinates with its structure and ease of improvisation, and at the same time provides great pleasure in playing itself - reading and co-creating meaning.

"The novel is written in the spirit of an inexorable search, which takes place on all imaginable levels... Horacio Oliveira, the central character of "Skolice", is a prototypical seeker. The members of the Snake Club are also searching, and Morelli, the author's double and What is wanted? Authenticity, the possibility of finding another life. That is expressed in a multitude of figures, such as: a bridge, a passage, a key, a 'kibbutz of desire.' the search for a different literature, for a kind of anti-literature and anti-novel or non-novel novel in a 'suicidal rebellion against the bookish mind'..."
