Dubravka Ugrešić: Štefica Cvek u raljema života
Evergreen of contemporary Croatian literature Štefica Cvek u raljame života is a witty novel about the love struggles of a young typist from an ordinary office who lives with her old aunt who is losing her teeth in the apartment. Štefica Cvek concludes that life is somewhere else and she longs for love, and since it all doesn't work out for her, like Pepljuga, she stays home to collect peas. She faces the merciless nature of life so characteristic of our region, chauffeurs, three-winged dudes, frigid intellectuals... She buys a simple parrot, introduces fashion changes and starts behaving like a woman. After unbearable living conditions and a difficult start, in which we find her at the beginning of the play, with the help of her experienced friend Anushka, she manages to pull herself together, stand on her feet and fight for her life. Worried that she will never come out of those ashes, she enrolls in an English language course and meets Mister Frndić, her man, with whom she fearlessly moves on through life. With this piece, the world-renowned author Dubravka Ugrešić gives a striking guide to a young girl so that she can face the greatest of all possible challenges as easily as possible - how to be a woman?
