Summary
Andre Gide: The Narrow Door
Gide's The Narrow Door was written in 1909 as a novella that, together with The Immoralist, forms a pair of narratives about the conflict between inner desires and moral principles. Unlike the main character of The Immoralist, who indulges in sensual pleasure, Gerome and Alice of the Narrow Gate sacrifice their love in order to reach the sublime of spirit. Along with Goethe's Jade of Young Werther, The Narrow Gate is considered one of the most beautiful and tragic love stories in the history of literature. Alas! I only now understand him very well; between God and him I was the only obstacle. Say, oh my God, which soul deserved you more? Wasn't he born for something better than to love me? And will I love him so much if he has to stop at me? How all that might be heroic shrinks in happiness! Oh! If only we could, hovering over the soul we love, see in it, as in a mirror, what image we leave behind!
