Summary
John Fowles: The Female French Lieutenant
The narrative time that Fowles writes about is the reign of Queen Victoria, a time of comfortable middle-class life in which religious postulates and scientific progress were believed almost equally. At the center of this romantic story is Sarah, a passionate woman who, because of a sin from her youth, was given the derogatory name of a female French lieutenant, and Charles, the betrothed of the beautiful and rich Ernestine and the heir of an even richer uncle. The time of the story is the second half of the 20th century, which allows the author to use all his knowledge about the people and spirit of the Victorian era. A movie of the same name was made based on the novel, starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. translated from English by Nada Šoljan
