Summary
Claudius Ptolemy: Mathematical System (Almagest)
The Mathematical System (Almagest), by the Alexandrian astronomer Claudius Ptolemy, was published for the first time around 150 AD, during the reign of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius. In this part, all relevant knowledge, achievements and calculations of ancient mathematical astronomy are collected. On the one hand, in the Mathematical System, theoretical claims about the movement of celestial bodies are presented by the deductive method, where the central place is occupied by the application of geometric methods as given in Euclid's Elements. On the other hand, it also contains detailed numerical data on the movement of celestial bodies based on detailed calculations. Thus, the Mathematical System became an irreplaceable source of knowledge and data on which ancient, Arab and medieval astronomers relied.
