Laplace Pierre-Simon

Summary

Pierre-Simon Laplace: Exposition of the world system

The works of the French mathematician, physicist and astronomer Pierre-Simon Laplace contributed significantly to the development of mathematics, physics, astronomy and statistics. He summarized and expanded the works of his predecessors. An integral transformation founded by a differential operator that appears both in classical and modern physics and a differential equation associated with it bear his name. He reformulated and developed the hypothesis of the origin of the solar system and was one of the first scientists to announce the existence of black holes and to foresee the occurrence of gravitational collapse. He set himself the task of writing a work that would: "offer an overall solution to the great mechanical problem represented by the solar system and which would bring theory into almost complete agreement with observations so that empirical equations would no longer have a place in astronomical tables". Such is his Celestial Mechanics, but then he wanted to write a work in which all these results will be brought closer to a wider readership. The result is the book "Exposition of the World System" in which there are no mathematical formulas or drawings, all mathematics is explained in words, and all the basic concepts from physics necessary for understanding the presentation are explained on the spot. Starting from a description of the universe as we see it, he presents arguments for the heliocentric system, explains the law of general gravitation and shows how it can be used to explain all the facts gathered by astronomical observations. The book contains a brief overview of the history of astronomy. The work can be considered a real monument to the achievements of the human mind.
