Summary

Nicolas Copernicus: Six Books on the Rotations of the Celestial Spheres

The book "Six Books on the Rotations of the Celestial Spheres" is an important work of the Renaissance Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543). The book was first published in 1543 in Nuremberg and offered an alternative model of the universe to Ptolemy's geocentric model, which was widely accepted until then. The Copernican or heliocentric system is based on the assertions that the Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the Sun. These claims were soon accepted in scientific circles, but they also caused alarm in the circles of the Roman Catholic Church, so in 1616 the Pope banned this work of Copernicus, i.e. put it on the Index of Prohibited Books, until 1822. The publication of this work is considered one of the main events in the history of science, which started the Copernican revolution, which significantly contributed to the scientific revolution.
