Summary
Albert Einstein's Travel Diaries: The Far East, Palestine and Spain 1922-1923
Editor and editor: Ze'ev Rosenkranz
Together with his wife at the time, Elsa Einstein, in late 1922, Albert Einstein embarked on a trip to the Far and Middle East that lasted five and a half months; these were parts of the world that the famous physicist had never visited before. Einstein's busy schedule included visits to Hong Kong and Singapore, two short stays in China, a six-week lecture tour in Japan, a twelve-day tour of Palestine and a three-week visit to Spain. This edition contains the complete diary that Einstein kept during this important journey. The diary notes in the telegraphic style contain Einstein's thoughts on science, philosophy, art and politics, his impressions and detailed reflections on events such as the inaugural lecture at the site of the future Hebrew University in Jerusalem, a reception in the garden hosted by the Japanese empress, an audience with the King of Spain and meetings with distinguished colleagues and statesmen. The diary notes also contain places that expose Einstein's stereotypes about members of different nations, but also raise questions about his attitude towards races.
