Summary

Heinz Bach: Basics of special pedagogy

In this book, all fundamental issues of special pedagogy as a science and practice of educational work with people with special needs are dealt with. In addition to others, the following questions were specially addressed; special pedagogy as a science; fundamental problems of special pedagogy; goals of special pedagogy; forms of action of special pedagogy; organizational forms of special pedagogy.

From the book
When talking about special pedagogy here, it is necessary to give one conceptual note: The label special pedagogy competes with a number of other terms: special pedagogy, pedagogy of the disabled, rehabilitative pedagogy, orthopedagogy, special education, special education, health education, therapeutic education, promoting pedagogy, integration pedagogy - and there are also dual labels such as the name special and special pedagogy.
(...) It is obvious, therefore, that the term that neutrally denotes promotion in the sense of the targeted realization of influence in formal and substantive terms is disappearing. Therefore, as before, the need to invent or invent it remains, in order to sufficiently complexly and appropriately denote the intention and method of action, at the same time differentiating it from neighboring endeavors (such as those of a medical or social nature).
At the current state of the discussion, the label special pedagogy has been chosen here, because it warns of the special, i.e., that which deviates from regular pedagogic pursuits, as well as special tasks and procedures, given the original pedagogical position; because other disciplines do not reach for it; because despite all this, it is open to different emphases on problems and actions, and in accordance with this, it never positions itself unilaterally, not even engaging in thematic narrowing; because it does not contain any problematic promises ("healing" etc.); because it is not necessarily focused only on certain people (eg the "disabled") and gives all the less reason to contribute to stigmatization, although it, like any other label, can also be misunderstood, as shown by the corresponding historical mortgages.
