His delicate task is suddenly overshadowed by a series of bizarre deaths, and Friar William becomes a detective who collects evidence, deciphers secret symbols and coded manuscripts, and dives deep into an eerie labyrinth where unusual things happen under the cover of night. Caught between power games, Friar Vilim begins to realize how high the stakes are, and that his investigation is blocked by those who fear imagination, curiosity and the power of ideas.
It is a serious euphemism to say that The Name of the Rose, Umberto Ecco's debut novel originally published in 1980, became an overnight bestseller. An erudite crime novel, but a brilliant book about medieval philosophy, history, theology and logic, became a mega-bestseller that captivated millions of readers around the world and was translated into more than 40 languages in just a few years.
