Summary
Anne Applebaum: Twilight of Democracy
Anne Applebaum, historian, journalist and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, in her new book analyzes the decline of democracy and the rise of right-wing populist politics with strong authoritarian tendencies, using the examples of Poland, the USA, Great Britain, Hungary and Spain. The twilight of democracy tries to shed light on the motivation of these people and the consequences of their actions: some are guided by personal reasons, others are overcome by "cultural despair" and a dangerous "nostalgia for restoration", while for some it is the fact that they were never democrats.
