The aim of this book is to provide in one volume a comprehensive overview of Roman history up to the dawn of the Middle Ages. Her theme is a political system and civilization that lasted a thousand years and at one point occupied the entire area of the Mediterranean and Western Europe. Researches in this broad field of study are now carried on more intensively than ever before, and our knowledge in the field is increased or modified at many points.
Thus, the writing of a general history of Rome invites criticism in many matters of detail. The chief criterion for a work of this kind is not that it should be minutely exact and up-to-date with regard to all the facts, but that it should arrange and evaluate the facts in a suitable order and proportion. Its purpose cannot be better described than the way Polybius, the greatest Greek writer on Rome, did it, who stated that his task was to show Roman history "as an organic whole", so that its meaning and function in world history would be clearly highlighted.
In general, I wrote more extensively in the parts of the book about earlier history, about what archaeological finds have been accumulating for years; also, I somewhat expanded the text somewhere near the end, in the period of Diocletian and Constantine. In addition to making a few changes in the arrangement of some chapters, I have added some summaries in some places: this is bound to involve a bit of repetition, which is not necessarily a bad thing if it is a textbook, and in fact is perhaps almost inevitable if you consider some perennial problems, such as the possibility of describing the Empire by dividing it into the reigns of emperors or by themes.
All the maps and plans have been redrawn, and many others have been added. The illustrations of the coins are reproduced in approximately the same size, regardless of the size of the original coin. I also added chronological tables, a general bibliography, some genealogies and more.
