Summary
Kathryn Ringrose: The Perfect Servant
Eunuchs in Byzantium
The topics that this book raises are at the center of scholarly attention of scholars of Byzantine and medieval Balkan history and culture, thus perfectly fitting the needs of the scholarly as well as a wider audience. It is about a problem that is modern in the best sense of the word, meaning under this too often used term the best directions of contemporary thought in the humanities, directions that raise new questions and strive to see phenomena in their historical perspective and proper social context. Wanting to engage in research into previously neglected topics and areas, at the end of the previous century and the beginning of this century, a whole new generation of gifted researchers and writers turned to a new way of looking at problems, aware of all the challenges that opening up problematic issues entails, but also of the necessity to present in an interesting way the lesser-known sides of history and those of its actors who remained in the shadow of rulers, wars and, apparently, "great" historical events.
