Evropski feminizmi 1700-1950

Offen Karen

Summary

Karen Offen: European Feminisms 1700-1950

This book includes research on the challenge of male hegemony from 1700 to 1950 in the large nations of continental Europe, while giving a comparative overview of the development of these processes in smaller nations striving to create national dr- and national cultures at the threshold of the 20th century. It has several goals. Readers, especially even those who are primarily interested in history, can find in the book a comprehensive account of the development of feminism in European societies, as well as a re-reading of European history not only from a female but also from a feminist perspective. Placing gender, or the relationship between men and women, at the center of European politics, where it has long been marginalized, the book attempts to redefine our understanding of European history and better explain the long but hidden tradition of feminist thought and politics.

The book also discusses issues that are the subject of debate in modern theories of feminism in order to resolve some misinterpretations and
demystify some confusing debates (about Enlightenment "reason" and "nature", "public nome" versus "private", the paradoxical dilemma: "equality" versus "difference") and by presenting a precise and broad historical background. Feminism viewed from a historical perspective offers us much more than a paradox, it is more a question of politics than philosophy.
