I have come to love you because I have seen your people in action, in battles and crucial moments, when the true character of your nation is recognized. I also loved you because of the sacrifices I made for you, because we become even more attached to people and things if that connection costs us sacrifices. Swiss criminologist, forensic scientist and university professor Archibald Rice came to Serbia in 1914 to investigate the truth about war suffering, but there he also found a home for a Serbian peasant - a fellow soldier. He went through the Golgotha of the retreat across Albania, participated in the breakthrough of the Thessaloniki front in the ranks of the Moravian division, saw the end of the war in Belgrade and stayed to live among the Serbs, believing in their soul. Nevertheless, disappointed with the post-war political situation, in 1928 he left us a letter that became the clearest representation of our being. "Listen, Serbs!" it is a merciless and devastatingly honest analysis of a people capable of the greatest heroic deeds, but also of the deepest moral declines. Rice spares no one: she directly opposes corruption, partisanship, vanity and forgetfulness, while at the same time celebrating the goodness and courage of the common man. He boldly confronts the powerful and the rulers, addressing them with words that no one else dared to utter. Almost a century later, his warnings sound as if they were written today. This important historical document is also a mirror in which we must look if we want to understand our past and preserve our future. It is the cry of a man who sees a great nation consciously hurtling towards its own destruction. Have we learned anything from our mistakes or, as Rice feared, have we remained our own worst enemies?
