Summary

Nicola Pugliese: Malakva

For the first time in the Serbian language. Four days of rain in Naples in anticipation of an extraordinary event. Devastating, unstoppable and relentless rain threatens to engulf Naples. As the streets collapse under the onslaught of the biblical flood, the city becomes the scene of inexplicable, miraculous events. Spooky voices like cries echo from the walls of the medieval castle. The sea level is rising dangerously, and the five-lire coins are suddenly playing a melody that only ten-year-old girls can hear. Carlo Andreoli, a melancholic journalist and passive chronicler of events, guides us through that apocalyptic gray landscape. His search for meaning will take us to dark alleys, remote bars and smoky newsrooms, but above all – to the hidden inner worlds of the Neapolitans themselves. Overwhelmed by a collective fear of the unknown, citizens await a fateful event that will fundamentally change their existence. Because in this hallucinatory, visionary elegy, the real protagonist is not man, but Naples itself – broken and torn between its own myths, traditions and melancholy. The mystery of this novel is equal to the mystery of its creator. Published in 1977, *Malakva* conquered Italy and sold out in just a few days. But a shock followed: at the writer's request, the novel disappeared from the shelves overnight. Nicola Pugliese renounced fame and consciously disappeared into stubborn isolation, becoming the "Neapolitan Salinger".
