Mladen Domazet: The Old Town on Hvar - Island Town at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries
The Old Town Museum published the book "The Old Town on Hvar: the Island Town at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries" by Ph.D. Mladena Domazeta, which brings the results of research into various areas of life in the Old Town as an island urban environment at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. By observing the events and movements that had a decisive impact on the Old Town from 1887 to 1914, the author tried to shed light on the influence of individuals, societies, institutions and external factors on the course of city life. He placed a special emphasis on how general historical processes were reflected at the local old town level, such as the deterioration of sailing ships or the viticulture crisis. The work is divided into several thematic units within which the author chronologically built a picture of the city - its political changes, economic dynamics, urban development, social life, education and religious life, and gave a picture of the Dominican monastery with the church of St. Petar the Martyr, the traditional and written heritage, life and legacy of don Šima Ljubić (1822 - 1896). The book is based on the original archival material, that is, on the funds from the Dominican monastery of St. Peter, Archives of the Parish Office of St. Stjepan, the Port Archives, the Cadastre Office, the Land Office and several private archives in the Old Town, as well as on the grounds of the Old Town Museum. Certain holdings of the State Archives in Split, as well as periodicals and literature relevant to the subject of the book, were also researched. The text is illustrated with numerous documentary photographs and accompanied by bibliographic notes, and a bibliography, index and summary in English are attached. The reviewers of the book are Ph.D. Marko Trogrlić and Ph.D. Josip Vrandečić.
