Summary
Junije Rastić: The Chronicle of Dubrovnik
"The Chronicle of Dubrovnik" is a Croatian translation of the extensive historical work of the Dubrovnik lord and chronicler Junije (Džona) Rastić (1669 - 1735), which was originally called Chronica Ragusina (or Croniche di Ragusa). The work is considered one of the most important and excellent analytical sources for the study of early and medieval history Dubrovnik Republike
Rastić's original manuscript in Italian was eventually lost. The work was preserved thanks to the transcriptions from 1735 made by Sergije Crijević and the Dubrovnik Franciscans
The book with the correct title "History of Dubrovnik / written by Gjon Restić" was translated from Italian and edited by the Dubrovnik prince and writer Orsat Pučić-Škatić. This edition was printed in Zadar in 1856 by the Batar brothers.
Rastić, Junije (Džono), Croatian historian and chronicler (Dubrovnik, 1669 or 1671 – Dubrovnik, 6. IX. 1735). He was a member of the Dubrovnik Senate, prince in Župa, Mljet and Ston, emissary of the Bosnian Pasha, member of the Small Council and twice prince of the Republic of Dubrovnik. He is the author of a comprehensive history of Dubrovnik (Croniche di Ragusa), which consists of 13 books, and which covers the history of Dubrovnik from 550 to 1451. This chronicle mainly deals with political and legislative issues related to the Republic of Dubrovnik. When creating the chronicle, Rastić made extensive use of archival materials and chronicles of Frano Gundulić from the 16th century and Ivan Marinov Gundulić from the 17th century. The original manuscript of Rastić's chronicle is now lost, and the oldest copies are that of S. Crijević and the copy kept in the Franciscan library in Dubrovnik (both from 1735). Using these transcriptions, the work was printed in its entirety for the first time in 1893 by N. Nodilo, under the title Chronica Ragusina Junii Restii. It is known that Rastić also wrote several poems in Croatian and Latin.
