Džono Rastić, Dubrovnik nobleman, was born in 1755. Educated at a Jesuit college, he became a respected lawyer, senator, and in 1797 he served as the prince of the Republic. In addition to having knowledge of classical languages and speaking Italian, he also knew French and English. According to his political beliefs, he was a real aristocrat and opposed the French Revolution and all the changes it brought, including the occupation and the fall of the Republic of Dubrovnik. In his literary work, he was a follower of Horace, an excellent satirist, and his poetry was also influenced by the English humorists Joseph Addison and Laurence Sterne. He developed his own form of mild satire, which mocks French social customs and the principles of the Encyclopedia and the Revolution that began to permeate his Dubrovnik. After the arrival of the French and the fall of the Republic, exhausted by illness and disillusioned by political and social changes, Rastić retired to his property in Trsten. There he was mostly surrounded by friends, among whom Đuro Hidža, Đuro Ferić and Marko Bruerević stand out. He died in Dubrovnik in 1814. (taken from: Paula Raguž: About the manuscript of Carmin Džon Rastić from the Dubrovnik Science Library).
