Summary

Franco Cardini: Europe and Islam

Europe is still in the process of being created. Its realization will only be possible if its history is also taken into account: Europe without history would be poor and impoverished. Because today originates from yesterday, and tomorrow is the fruit of the past. Such a history does not limit the present, but encourages it to be faithful to the past, and at the same time to be open to progress. Located between the Atlantic, Asia and Africa, Europe has been an area of interweaving of history and geography since the time when the ancient Greeks gave it its name. The future must rely on this ancient heritage, which since prehistoric times has continuously enriched Europe, making it immensely creative in its unity, but also in all its differences, within the wider world context. The publication series "Creation of Europe" is the result of the initiative of five publishers who come from different nations and languages (Beck from Munich, Basil Blackwell from Oxford, Critica from Barcelona, Laterza from Rome and Bari and Seuil from Paris) and its goal is to explain the creation of Europe by showing the successes, but at the same time not hiding the difficulties. In their quest for unity, European nations have survived numerous disagreements, conflicts, dissensions, contradictions. This publishing project shows them clearly: the European undertaking will not be able to be carried out unless the perspective of the future consists of knowledge of the past. This is precisely why the title of the series has an imperfect character. Namely, we think that the time has not yet come to write a rounded European history. The studies we propose are written by the best contemporary historians, who are not exclusively European. They will deal with key topics from different areas of European history - economy, politics, society, religion and culture, relying on a long historiographical tradition that has been present since Herodotus, up to new concepts that significantly influenced European historiography during the twentieth century. Thanks to the clarity of the writing, each individual publication is comprehensible to a wider readership.
