Summary

Svein Monnesland: The Herzegovina Uprising of 1875

250 years since the Herzegovina Uprising This book deals with the events from mid-1875 to mid-1876. During those twelve months, the Herzegovina Uprising was closely followed in the European media, often on the covers of magazines and newspapers. European newspapers sent their correspondents to Herzegovina. Often among them were artists who transferred their impressions to paper and canvas. Sometimes foreign correspondents gave the wrong names of villages, and in this book the toponyms are left as written in the sources. The main goal of this book is to show the artistic side of foreign publicity. That is why it primarily includes illustrations from magazines and newspapers, as well as paintings by famous artists. The goal is not to give a scientific description of the event, because many expert studies on the insurgent movement have been published. Less known, however, are how many artistic representations there are. Many foreigners who followed the events noted that women played an important role in the war. They brought provisions and equipment to the battlefield, and helped in the background. There were even cases when they actively fought. In the book, we bring several pictures that show these heroines. When the Balkan War against the Turks, which began in 1875, turned into a military conflict between Russia and the Ottoman Empire in 1877, international interest shifted to events in Bulgaria. The areas where the fighting originally took place, Herzegovina, Bosnia, Montenegro and Serbia, no longer attracted so much attention. The Herzegovina Uprising of 1875 was still such an important event in European history that it deserves to be properly commemorated on its 150th anniversary. That was the spark that ignited the Balkans and changed the map of Europe. The courage and energy of the Herzegovinian companies can serve as a good example to all other rebels, those who fight for justice and freedom.
