Vladeta Janković: Directory of Classical Antiquity - Mythology, History, Art
A lexicon like the Directory of Classical Antiquity can never lose its freshness because its heroes and their stories are woven into the history of the world's cultural and artistic heritage, and one can say - also into our everyday life.
According to the introductory words of the compiler, Professor Vladeta Janković, this directory differs from similar lexicons available today in that, "in addition to mythological ones, it also includes real figures of importance for social and cultural history, and to some extent also in that it tries, within certain parameters, to indicate the importance of this or that mythological or historical figure in the latter's artistic and generally spiritual creativity. Therefore, mythological parameters mainly contain a version of the basic legend, its symbolic meaning and the most famous works in literature, fine arts and music."
At the same time, whenever the opportunity arises, this directory also points to the connection of our soil and tradition with classical antiquity, primarily the Hellenic and ancient Roman heritage, which represents its special importance and richness.
From Aphrodite and Aristotle, through Caesar and Caryatids, to Sappho, Virgil and Zeus, in almost a thousand locations, a wonderful and irresistible world of ancient legends, artistic and scientific achievements, customs and beliefs of the ancient Greeks and Romans opens before us, an era that we rightly consider the dawn of humanity and the foundation of Western civilization.
