There are few world writers whose biography and literary work combine history and politics to such a high degree as in the case of Ivo Andrić. His life covers both world wars and the creation of both Yugoslavias. He was an indirect and direct participant in many historical events related to the fate of Bosnia and Yugoslavia. He knew a large number of political figures and was a witness to major historical events. Lacking the courage or knowledge to point out the political content of his work, over time, with due respect to rare exceptions, the idea of him as a storyteller of past times, and especially of Bosnia under Turkish rule, became more and more solidified.
