Summary
Dominique Fernandez: Dictionary of Russia Lovers
It is a collection of essays organized in the form of a dictionary, dedicated to individual personalities, concepts and phenomena with the ambition of providing a profile of Russian culture, described from the perspective of an expert connoisseur, but also of a lover who does not want to hide his affection and mask it with false objectivity. In the introduction to the book, Fernandes also reveals his deep-rooted affection for Russia. In addition to the specialized literature that marked his early reading experience, as a young man in Paris, through a Russian student colleague, he met a poor Russian émigré family of count origin, with whom he then became close and found in them a warmth and immediacy that stood in complete contrast to the cold, puritanical atmosphere of his parents' home. "That's why, since then, a great love for the Russian way of life and pre-Marusian culture has awakened in me," writes Fernandes.
