Summary
John Macdonald: The Caporetto and Soča Campaign
The Italian Front 1915 – 1918
From May 1915 to October 1917, the armies of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire fought a series of battles along the Soča River, on a front of a hundred kilometers from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea. The campaign was fought on the worst possible terrain for warfare, with terrible losses on both sides, often surpassing losses in the more famous battles of the Great War. But this huge battle is often overlooked in the history of the war, which focuses on the fighting on the Western and Eastern fronts. John Macdonald, in this accessible and brilliantly illustrated book, sets out to right that injustice. His description of the battles on Soča, the battlefields and the terrible conditions in which the soldiers lived and fought is further enhanced by a selection of original photographs that depict the gruesome reality of that conflict.
