Tomislav Lipljin: Dictionary of Varaždin's Kajkavian Speech

The expanded, second edition of Lipljin's Dictionary fully confirms the assessment of academician Miroslav Šicel that it is "a truly outstanding contribution to the hitherto rare attempts to create a dialectological dictionary dedicated to the urban, in this case, Varaždin's Kajkavian speech". Namely, almost all the existing, already quite numerous "amateur" Kajkavian dictionaries of local dialects deal predominantly with the dialects of rural areas, and the first of the urban ones to get such a dictionary is precisely this one from Varaždin. The Kajkavian language of this city has its rich and steady centuries-long existence contained in all its most significant forms of literary, professional-scientific and (conversational) language. Namely, Varaždin and Zagreb were, with all their historical meanings, especially from the 16th to the 19th century, the most important Kajkavian centers and the basis of rich Kajkavian literature. With its first and expanded second editions, Lipljin's Dictionary belongs to the category of dictionaries that are not only collections of words, interpret exclusively their meanings, but with one and the other feature are the most reliable guardians of written words, indispensable materials for the history of language, a kind of cultural monuments, but also pictures and examples of life, the word
