Radica Joško

Summary

Joško Radica: All our Daks. The South of Croatia in the whirlwind of the Second World War and the Yugoslav reign of terror

dedication of the author

The book on more than 830 pages thoroughly investigates, documents and provides testimonies about partisan and communist crimes in the area of Dubrovnik and the wider Croatian south at the end of the Second World War and in the aftermath

Key themes and significance of the book

  • The symbolism of Daksa: The title of the book is inspired the islet of Daks in front of Dubrovnik, which became a symbol of the suffering of Dubrovnik's intellectuals, priests and prominent citizens. On that island, in October 1944, immediately after entering the city, partisans liquidated 53 civilians without trial. [1]
  • "Contributions to the truth": The subtitle of the book clearly indicates the author's intention to shed light on the history of repression that has been kept silent for decades through archival materials, lists of victims, witness statements and family memories.
  • Geographic coverage: Apart from the city of Dubrovnik itself, the work covers the suffering and fate of people from the entire Dubrovnik area, including Konavle, Dubrovnik County, the Dubrovnik coast, the islands (Mljet, Šipan, Lopud, Koločep) and the Pelješac peninsula. [1]
  • Known victims:Among the documented victims stand out people like the mayor Dr. Niko Koprivica and the famous Jesuit Padre Petar Perica, the author of the popular church songs "Hello Maiden, Queen of the Croats" and "Do nebesa nek se ori"
