Abel Sánchez. The story of passion for many is the best novel by Miguel de Unamun, the greatest Spanish writer of the 20th century. In the novel, Unamuno reinterpreted the well-known biblical story of Cain and Abel in a modern way and placed the problem of human envy at the center of consideration. Joaquín Monegro and Abel Sánchez are two friends who have known each other since birth and have spent their whole lives together. As a child, the serious Joaquín was the one who studied hard and achieved success in school, but the more talented and fun-loving Abel was the main character on the playground and a favorite among the children. The realization that Abel easily achieves success in society, first among friends and later among women, deeply cut a strong feeling of jealousy in Joaquín's heart. Later, Abel will become a painter and Joaquín a doctor, but Joaquín's sense of rivalry will follow him throughout his life, and in the novel will develop into philosophical considerations about the relationship between art and science, passion and reason, faith and unbelief. Unamun's masterpiece is a psychological study of the character of the modern Cain, who is haunted by a tragic hatred of his neighbor and who cannot find answers to the questions: Why am I so envious? What did I do to become like this? Why do I live hating myself? Why do we all live here hating each other? Along with the novel, the book also includes two of Unamun's short stories, The Madness of Doctor Montarco and The Novel about Don Sandalio, the Chess Player, which problematically correspond to the theme of the novel and are therefore often published together with it in translations by Abel Sánchez into other world languages, and represent anthological novelistic achievements.
