Summary

Željka Matijašević: Black, white, gray

Željka Matijašević, in her new book Black, white, gray, deals with the psychoanalysis of ambivalence, that is, states of the psyche that are characterized by strong, extreme affects. To describe these conditions, Matijašević uses colors: black and white as the colors of extremes and gray as the color of balance and dialogue, and through this achromatic spectrum she draws various life situations, literary works and examples from interpersonal relationships to show how, for one's own psychological well-being, it is important to negotiate and face complex situations instead of relying on simple short-term solutions, and how freedom should be found in the space between impulses and responses. This book continues in its form on the author's book Black lymph/green heart: an alternative lexicon of the soul (2016), because it consists of a series of entries that speak in different ways about the development of the personality, that is, about the fact that the psyche is a dynamic system subject to both growth and stagnation and regression.
