Zluradost: šadenfrojde: tamna strana ljudske prirode

Smith H. Richard

Summary

Richard H. Smith: Evil: Schadenfreude: The Dark Side of Human Nature

The world has "borrowed" the word Schadenfreude from the German language, which is increasingly entering universal use, because there is no corresponding English word. By combining two words: Schaden, which means evil, damage, and Freude, which means joy, this coin was created, which most accurately depicts one of the dark sides of human nature - rejoicing in someone else's misfortune. An extremely important and necessary book that asks the main question: are we living in the age of an epidemic of evil?

The theme that the author conveys throughout the book is that the troubles that affect others can bring us joy because sometimes we benefit from these troubles - more than we are aware of or want to admit.  He also emphasized that, however natural it is to feel schadenfreude, i.e. malice, most of us are not quite sure that we should feel it, or at least admit that we feel it. The book abounds in citing and interpreting numerous examples of open and covert wickedness in contemporary society -  in politics, sports, entertainment, religion, as well as in reality programs. In a very graphic and detailed way, the author explained all the appearing forms of wickedness using the examples of the fates of Tiger Woods, Hitler, Lincoln, Marie Stuart...

Are we living in the age of an epidemic of wickedness?

What kind of profit do evildoers have? And why does someone enjoy our suffering?

What is the relationship between justice and cruelty?

Are there deserved human misfortunes?

About cruelty in literature, sports, politics, entertainment, religion... An excellent book about recognizing and understanding cruelty - a sure sign of hostility.

Dr. Zoran Milivojević, psychotherapist, author of the book Emotions
