The French language belongs to the group of Romance languages, and is spoken in France, then in Belgium, Romance Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco, part of Canada (the province of Quebec), West and Central Africa, Haiti and the Seychelles islands. It is estimated that there are around 220 million francophone speakers in the world today. French is the tenth most spoken language in the world, and it is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations. The manual was written with the aim of introducing its users to basic conversational forms in the French language and enabling them to navigate the most basic communication situations in that language.
