Summary

Aleksandar M. Savić: Between united Europe and lonely Russia, the Principality of Serbia and the Ottoman Empire (1839-1858)

The first scientific monograph and complete history of the Principality of Serbia between the fall of Prince Miloš Obrenović from power and the fall of Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević from power and the return of Prince Miloš to the Serbian throne. The two stormy decades of Serbia in the middle of the 19th century were filled with complex relations between the Principality of Serbia and the Ottoman Empire, social changes and political struggles and conflicts. Torn between two dynasties and the political aspirations they symbolize, the Principality of Serbia is also torn between East and West, between Ottoman rule and Russian patronage, between lonely Russia and united Europe, between internal conflicts and national aspirations. The monograph deals with key issues such as the role of the Serbian hood in Constantinople and muhafiz in Belgrade, the Muslim population in Serbia, the violation, stabilization and strengthening of Serbia's autonomy, the restless Serbian-Ottoman border, the Serbian government's policy towards Serbs and Bulgarians in the Ottoman Empire, and problems in trade relations. Capital book about Serbia in the vortex of conflicting interests and on the restless border, about everyday and social life in the Principality.
