Summary
Marko Attila Hoare: Bosnian Muslims in the Second World War
Bosnian Muslims in the Second World War is a study about the relationship between the Muslims of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the National Liberation Movement. The book tries to explain how and why large parts of the Muslim population supported the NOP and explores the dynamics of this process. This book is, in fact, the story of the double Bosnian resistance movement - NOP and Muslim autonomism - how the first prevailed, while encompassing elements of the second, how it was reflected in the wider Yugoslav resistance movement and how it influenced the establishment and construction of the new Yugoslav state that emerged from the war and revolution. In order to gain supremacy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the NOP had to occupy Bosnian cities; to do this, he had to win the support of at least part of the Muslim population; in order to succeed in this, the NOP had to co-opt elements of the Muslim elite; in order to get the support of all Muslim classes, he had to firmly and openly support the principle of Bosnian independence.
