Summary

Kosta Nikolić: Serbian literature and politics (1945 - 1991)

Main currents

A new study by Kosta Nikolić, one of the most prolific Serbian historians of the younger generation, is devoted to the main currents of the relationship between Serbian literature and politics, in the period from the end of World War II until 1991. This work shows how, in the one-party political system of the former Serbia and Yugoslavia, the oppositional nature of thought and action, instead of within the framework of pluralism of thought in the Socialist Union of Working People provided for it, nevertheless spilled over into the spaces of freedom of such immanent art, this time literature. Eros and the significance of literature, this study shows, reaches its highest heights on the edge of prohibitions and political restrictions.

That is why in this book the most famous literary and political cases and their protagonists are described in a convincing, descriptive and measured way, especially their significance and influence on the historical disintegration of Yugoslavia. As the author himself says, his intention was not to deal with the history of Serbian literature, but to investigate and examine the two-way relationship between literature and politics, and even determine the writers' motivation for concrete political engagement, which most often influenced their works of art. This monograph was created as part of the work on a wider project of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, under the title: Serbian society in the Yugoslav state - between democracy and dictatorship
