Summary
David Thomas, Kerr Inkson: Cultural Intelligence
Living and Working Globally
To live in the modern, global world and multicultural environment, we need cultural intelligence. The very concept of being able to successfully interact in different cultures is easy to understand, but it takes time and effort to reach a high level of cultural intelligence. Starting from these assumptions, David Tomas and Kerr Inkson wrote a book that is a guide to acquiring this valuable skill.
In the first part of the book, the basic idea of cultural intelligence, its principles and practice is presented; it is explained what cultural differences are and how they shape people's behavior, all with the aim of developing our sensitivity to behavior shaped by culture and skills useful in cross-cultural situations.
In the second part, the authors apply the basic principles of cultural intelligence to several typical problems in interpersonal relations within a multicultural context, such as difficulties in communication, negotiation, making distinctions... Their message is that understanding culture is a difficult but not impossible task, as well as that we can successfully operate in different cultural frameworks if we learn the basic principles, adopt a conscious approach and show a willingness to act as a person adaptable to different cultures.
