Heimans Jeremy | Timms Henry

Summary

Jeremy Heimans, Henry Timms: The New Power: How Power Works in Our Hyperconnected World - and How to Make It Your Own

For most of human history, the rules of power were clear: power was to be won, then jealously guarded by any means necessary. It is an "old power" that was available only to a few. But in the modern world, where Internet platforms have conquered the world, the paradigm of power is also changing: the "new power" is accessible and should be characterized by inclusiveness. Although it may seem abstract to us, the struggle between old and new power decides who will rule, how we will work, and even how we think and feel.

What do Pope Francis and Donald Trump have in common, and how are Lego and ISIS, TedX and Tiffany similar? Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms in The New Power deal with this and many other phenomena of the modern world, where hyper-connectivity means greater democracy, but also almost unlimited possibilities for abuse. The new power is books that give us a new understanding of the world and our role in it.

"A must read! A work that tells how to connect millions of people to roll up their sleeves and create the change we long for." Alicia Garza, Co-Founder of the Black Lives Matter Movement

"A fascinating book that will change the way you think about gaining power - and how to use it for good." Adam Grant

Jeremy Heimans is the co-founder and CEO of Purpose, a public benefit corporation that specializes in building and supporting social movements around the world. An activist from an early age, in 2005 he co-founded GetUp!, an Australian political organization with more members than all Australian political parties combined, and founded the global campaigning organization Avaaz and the LGBT rights platform All Out. He is the winner of the Visionary Award on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Ford Foundation. Fast Company named him one of the most creative people in business.

Henry Timms is president and CEO of the 92nd Street Y, a cultural and community center that organizes programs and movements that promote education and civic engagement. During his leadership, this 144-year-old institution was named one of the most innovative companies by Fast Company. He is the co-founder of #GivingTuesday, a worldwide philanthropic movement that engages people in over a hundred countries and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for charity. He is a visiting lecturer at Stanford's PACS Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society.
