Haler Ena Katarina

Summary

Ena Katarina Haler: Nevini

The public first learned about the writer Ena Katarina Haler in 2019, when her first prose title Reaching Out was published by V.B.Z. It was an ambitious historical novel, a triptych about a place in Banija during and after World War II, the kind of book that is usually written by old bearded writers and becomes Eastern European classics. Here, Haler introduced us to a world that clearly haunts her: the world of a neglected rural border, a border in the literal, not the political, sense. It is a world of broken people whom history bends and pulls up like grass, and every twenty or fifty years they start anew, at the incinerator or in someone else's house.

The same world Haler deals with in his new novel Nevini. It again deals with the wild, post-war rural area, again deals with the windstorm of the border, again deals with history - but the more recent one, from the nineties to today. But if her new novel starts from the same world, it brings something new. It brings us a story about adolescent female growth, written in a dark, peppery and creepy way. With the icy restraint of an Agota Kristof, the author takes us through a girl's physiological changes, through kissing and abuse, rape and incest, to round off the novel with a dramatic violent act that will remind you less of a crime story and more of an ancient myth. All this happens in a microcosm that rises from the ashes of abandoned or burned houses, in a world where the past is not spoken of or spoken of in whispers, and children bear the guilt of absent, despotic fathers. If you're interested in what Lila Cerullo would sound like on a banyan ruin, Nevini is the book that gives the answer.
