Summary
Petar Miletić: The Unconquered Croatian Gymnasium - the importance of the Croatian gymnasium in Rijeka for the preservation of national identity
This book is the first comprehensive work on the Croatian gymnasium in Rijeka from the perspective of its role and significance in the preservation of Croatian national identity in the second half of the 19th century, when it was seriously threatened by the systematic Hungarianization and Italianization of the city of Rijeka. In addition to its primary, educational activity, the gymnasium also led a political struggle for the preservation of Croatian linguistic and national identity, thus becoming the most important Croatian institution in the city and a kind of symbol of national resistance. Because of this, it experienced media and vandal attacks and, in the end, was forced to move from Rijeka, but it managed to educate generations of Croatian patriots and national revivalists, so this school is partly to blame for the fact that Rijeka and Istria are now parts of the Republic of Croatia.
