The studies published in this book were written over the last five years and represent part of my research into Russian intellectual, political and cultural history. Although they were originally printed in magazines ("Filosofija i društvo" and "Treći program" of Radio Belgrade), I thought that publishing their amended and supplemented versions inside the cover of this book had some sense and justification. Several things influenced this, perhaps wrong, belief of mine. One does not refer so much to the status of magazines in our public (their availability and readership), as to the "sad fate" of periodicals, which I often faced when moving my own library. Namely, in these migrations I was often forced, after packing the books, to leave piles of magazines that I had been collecting for years and, in this way, turn them into material for paper recycling. Without illusions about the possibilities and scope of resisting transience, I believe that books still have a longer "lifespan". If nothing else, it is more practical to collect and publish in one place texts that are otherwise scattered in dusty volumes of old magazines. All the more so, if these studies form a certain thematic entity, then the procedure of their re-publication can be defended with arguments related to both their content and the author's approach. In this respect, I hope, the reader of this book can see how the collected works - studies on Russian messianism, the birth of the Russian intelligentsia, the emergence of the "Jewish question" and Western ideas about Russia - nevertheless constitute something more than a mere collection of the author's texts.
