Summary

Lada Čale Feldman: Women, drama and performance

Between post-socialism and post-feminism

The collection: "Women, drama and performance: between post-socialism and post-feminism" consists of eight texts, which are the result of a dialogue between literary and theater critics from the countries of the former Yugoslavia about women's dramatic writing. The occasion for the meeting was a project initiated by Nataša Nelević, a Montenegrin critic, playwright, theater expert and feminist activist. The spatial and temporal coordinates within which the main topic was discussed - female dramatic creativity, created on the territory of the countries that made up Yugoslavia, in the period between the end of socialism and the moment in which feminism opens up for a new reflection of one's own self, on the one hand, but also for a new neutralization of women, on the other - highlighted at least two important aspects of this dialogue. First, the academic space that is in our immediate neighborhood is a fertile ground for establishing a dialogue in which, through the recognition of similarities, the differences necessary for the dialogue to be maintained as a dialogue, not to be petrified in a monologic form, are revealed.

Secondly, the time constraints made it possible to open up the basic topic - women's dramatic writing - to several important questions: what is the relationship between women's dramatic writing and the (dominant) literary canon, how (patriarchal) values are called into question, what is the connection between the body (desire) and the reading of reality, how a woman can think of herself without the risk of essentialism, how writing and feminist politics are connected and, finally, what lies behind that post in relation to feminism.
