Summary

Vera Horvat Pintarić: Witness in the picture

New figures for new realities in the modern era

Book of discussions and reflections on the iconographic sources and motifs of works of modern art, on the role and meaning of man in reality and the representation of his figure in art. In the extreme ideologies and public life of the 20th century, reality is understood easily and superficially, and man is portrayed as a pseudo-hero, according to the conventions of 19th century academicism. The great masters of modern art and their predecessors, such as Cézanne, Rodin, Matisse, Picasso, Moore, Giacometti, Klee, freed from requirements of the client and prescribed iconography, and feeling and reflecting on reality, create a new image of man, a figure in free proportions, depicting him as a deformed, fantastic, monstrous, mixed being, human and animal. Such a representation of the whole of man, called new ugliness, is created in the search for truth, for the representation of man as he is, in contrasts, and reveals the conscious or unconscious influences of tribal and medieval art. This also foreshadowed a more complex, intricate reality, a reality resulting from the confrontation of artists with themselves, immersion in the world and personal experiences. On this ground, one of the main problems of modern art was solved: how to express personality in societies where personality was considered a disease? Totalitarian societies, societies of vertical barbarians and the melancholic double, Faustian soul are characterized, namely, by the complete absence of a sense of time and escape from the reality of which artists are true witnesses and messengers.

By observing and analyzing great works of modern art, using the testimonies of the artists themselves and relevant interpretations of works of modern art, art historian and academic Vera Horvat Pintarić (Sisak, 1926), she wrote an original and indispensable book in the study of modern art. Therefore, this book, intended for regular members of Matica Hrvatska and enriched with almost three hundred illustrations, will surely arouse the interest of experts as well as the widest circle of readers.
