One of the "cult" studies of the art historian Aby Warburg "The Ritual of the Serpent" was published in the book. It is a lecture held in 1923 in a sanatorium, where Warburg was being treated for a serious mental illness, and the topic is the magical rituals of the American Pueblo Indians. Warburg interprets these rituals as attempts at magical-symbolic "taming" of natural forces, which are universal in all primitive cultures. His text is followed by a study by Fritz Saxel on Warburg's stay in New Mexico, and a more extensive study by W. S. Heckscher "The Genesis of Iconology" - on the origin of iconology as a method of historical art research as part of Warburg's approach.
